After reading this article from slat, What The... I realized, after not much reflection, i do this all the time. Not as much as the author emphasizes it, but i do, and many of my friends, and acquaintances do so too. After thinking about it for a while, i realized the reason we use this dot-dot-dot "short cut" is because we're lazy. Yeah, maybe it sometimes make sense and looks good, and is even appropriate. But it doesn't formalize a well structured sentence, or paragraph (except, obviously when its grammatically correct, following the English language rules).
In my opinion, ellipses are not that bad, and as the author notes out, they shoildent be "used in lieu of commas," or "as question mark replacements" or even " instead of a single period at the end of a statement". But I believe that in moderation they could even be accepted, even encojraged, in a writing piece.
And as for where the author talks about the over use of ellipses in texts or emails, i dont really find a problem in that. I mean, sure we already clarifyied that they are not the best for a formal writing piece. But when talking about emails, or even texts, which are usually to people close to us we familiarize with, exchanging writing shouldent have to be perfectly punctuated, or corrected grmmatically for all mistakes.
Probably the constant texting a emailing with wrong spelling will lead to getting accustomed to do the same in important formal pieces. But adding a couple of more additional ellipses to these texts and emails, wont necessarily hurt anybody.
